Ughelli Rovers Football Club concluded their 2025 Nigeria Nationwide League One (NLO) Division One campaign in style, securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory against rivals Delta Marines FC at the Stephen Keshi Stadium’s Asaba Centre.
A moment of magic from left-back Ayoro Miracle proved the difference, as the Eguono V’Owvian Boys celebrated a second consecutive win to close out the season on a high. The match, played under the midday sun, saw both sides struggle to find their rhythm early on, with defenses holding firm.
However, in the 28th minute, Ayoro Miracle ignited the Ughelli Rovers faithful with a stunning goal. Latching onto a pinpoint cross, the sneaky left-back unleashed a fierce strike that left the Delta Marines goalkeeper with no chance, handing Rovers a deserved 1-0 lead.
Under the stewardship of head coach Ekete Nyerovwo, who returned after a health-related absence, Rovers displayed resilience and tactical discipline. The high-line defensive approach stifled Delta Marines’ attacking threats, with captain and goalkeeper Efe Bartholomew commanding his area to secure his second clean sheet of the season. Despite pushing for a second goal, Rovers’ attacking efforts were thwarted by a resolute Marines defense, and the scoreline remained unchanged at the break.
The second half saw Delta Marines press for an equalizer, but Rovers’ backline, marshaled by Bartholomew, stood tall, ensuring no clear chances for the opposition. The final whistle sparked jubilant scenes among players and staff, as the victory capped a remarkable turnaround following a mid-season slump that included a 1-0 loss to Isoko United in the Oil City Derby and a 2-1 defeat to OYC FC.
This triumph marks Ughelli Rovers’ second straight win over Delta Marines in competitive fixtures, following their 1-0 victory in the 2024 Bet9ja Asaba Super Cup final, courtesy of Udori Great’s lone strike.
The result further solidifies Rovers’ dominance in this growing rivalry, having also played out a 1-1 draw in the 2024 NLO season at Kwale Township Stadium.
